Artist, naturalist, photographer, geologist.

Born in Kidderminster, west Midlands, UK, in 1911, Joyce Mary Austin was a prolific artist with wide-ranging interests, inspirations and subjects.

She concentrated on painting in water colour and oil, often landscapes and countryside scenes, as well as some abstract work. She also worked in other media and with a range of materials.

Joyce was educated at Kidderminster High School and then St Faith’s, Weston-Super-Mare. After training at Kidderminster and Birmingham Schools of Art she taught in Yorkshire, and at the Kidderminster School of Art. She was appointed as a Lecturer in Art and Craft at Worcester College of Education, where she stayed for 22 years.

Joyce was exhibited twice at the Royal Academy in London and many times in and around Malvern, Worcestershire, where she lived most of her life. She was a keen traveller to Europe and further afield including Africa. Joyce retired in 1966 and died in Malvern in 1988.

This website has been set up by Joyce’s family as a tribute to her life and work. It is regularly updated and expanded, including as works held by third parties are brought to their attention. You can browse a gallery of her work here and there are links to other content in the menu above.
